What is a BIN?

The Bank Identification Number (BIN) is the first digits of a payment card. It identifies the card scheme and the institution that issued the card.

A BIN lookup is useful for checkout context, fraud review and reconciliation. It cannot tell you whether a card is valid, active or has funds, and it never needs the full card number.

Use the BIN lookup API in your app

The same lookup is available as a REST endpoint, so you can add issuer context to a checkout or a fraud review. The API costs 0.5 credit (about $0.0005) per request.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits do I need?

The first 6 to 8 digits of the card number.

Is it safe to type a BIN here?

A BIN is only the first digits and does not identify a single card. Never enter a full card number, expiry date or security code.

Does it tell me whether a card is valid?

No. It returns issuer information for the BIN. It does not check whether a card exists, is active or has funds.

What if no result is found?

Some BINs are missing from the data source. An empty result is returned as it is and is never replaced with an invented value.
